Yesterday I experienced one of the more wonderful traditions of NYC - the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade! It is exactly what it sounds like. On this day the boardwalk that runs alongside Coney Island beach is home to mermaids, Neptune, lobsters, marching bands, sailors and various others. Why? You know, I never thought to ask. I feel that 'why not' is a better question.
I went with my friends Chris and Michel (who for the purposes of the day is not Michel, is Aliss Glass...you'll see) No further explanations needed...pure fun, beautiful sun, expression, exuberance and unbridled joy all day. Somewhere along the way we ended up IN the parade instead of being mere spectators.

By a sweet passing thought...if someone had told me five years ago that I would be sitting in a charming apartment in a beautiful neighbourhood in Brooklyn, having dinner with one of my closest friends who is from Mexico, having wonderful conversation...my mind just boggles, sometimes. If you'd told me I would have said 'really? Well that sounds great but a bit of a long shot'.
